Head Shot

An interview with Andrew Roberts

1. Why do you craft?

Artistic endeavors have always been part of my life from a young age. I have been drawing wildlife pictures for a while now and turned my hand at teddy bear making as well, my craft has progressed over the years. I love paper craft and it is a niche that has become a big part of my leisure time. Craft has many benefits for me, it relaxes me, provides a creative outlet, moments shared with my children, learning and developing new skills, being part of a wider community of like minded people, sharing my skills and so many more reasons. I have to say it has given me the opportunity to extend my self.

2. What do you feel is your crafting forte- cards, minis, altered art, layouts, etc?

I would have to say my forte is altered constructive art and mini albums run a very close second. I am a little bit of a box addict so they are featured in many of my projects. I love that mini albums can be simplistic or very ornate but they all have a place in my creative portfolio. Graphic 45 papers are very prominent in my work ( or shall I say my main paper collections, I am a total addict).

3. What inspires and motivates you to be creative?

My creative inspiration derives from many sources. Some examples of where I go to for inspiration are fellow crafters, pinterest, my own ideas, the Graphic 45 paper collections themselves plus many others. Creative inspiration is a very eclectic thing and it can hit you when you least expect it. I  have many ideas when I see packaging from many different products. Motivation is key to creative success. I keep my mojo going by introducing new products to my stash and always looking at others creativity and this keeps my creativity fresh and interesting. I also make sure I take a break regularly.

4. What do you do with your projects once they're complete?

I have made many  of my projects as  heirloom type items to pass along to my children. I have many mini albums that will be filled over time with photos to ensure my kids have memories of their childhood.  I have given a couple to my wife and some are displayed throughout my home.

5. What is the funniest craft disaster you've ever had?

I guess  crafting disasters are common amongst creative people. I have had many mishaps over the years. I remember heat embossing on one occasion and heating to close to my jar of left over powder and melting the whole lot. Also I have been creating a box project and sealed the lid and had to start over. The funny part about that one is I have done it more than once. But I always try and tell my self a mistake is a creative opportunity.

We love that! "A mistake is a creative opportunity." Thanks for sharing with us, Andrew!

Now, enjoy Andrew's brilliant Once Upon a Springtime altered house and mini album with his tutorial below!

"My inspiration for this project was to create a simple project to demonstrate how graphic 45 papers can give a simple project style and vintage appeal. I think it is very easy to get overwhelmed by complexity when designing. I have had many people ask for a simple project that they can try out. Graphic 45 papers are perfect for embellishing your creations if you do not have access to a lot of embellishments .

Tip: Mini albums can be a challenge try using cardboard tubes to make the pages. Challenge yourself to embellish only using fussy cut images from your chosen graphic 45 collections."
