An Interview with Lori Williams

1. Why do you craft?

I craft for so many reasons.  I love to create beautiful things…taking a sheet of paper and making it into a realistic flower is so amazing to me or making a cherish memory layout that will remind me of a precious time in years to come is priceless.  Crafting helps me relax from a busy world of being a single mom and working full time.  It’s a place I can go and express myself through my art and share a little piece of me with the world.

2. What do you feel is your crafting forte?

I’ve loved a variety so I’ve done it all but I probably lean towards fancy fold cards and handmade flowers the most.  I prefer the dimension you can get with folded cards more than layouts and everybody can always use a card.

3. What inspires and motivates you to be creative?

I’ve been creative my whole life from pottery in high school, to a college degree in Jewelry design and then with the birth of my oldest son moving into paper.  I love expressing myself one way or the other and I find that the paper medium is one I can do from my bedroom/home while being with my kids and not have a ton of equipment that other mediums might require yet still being able to make my art.

4. What do you do with your projects once they're complete?

OK this one is a confession…I’m horrible about remembering to give my cards away.  A good friend will have an occasion and I find myself running to the drugstore at the last moment to grab a card…what in the world is wrong with me?  I really have starting trying to be better about giving away my cards and work to other people that would enjoy it.  I have a shelf in my bedroom that has cubicles in it.  Most of the cubicles hold my supplies for crafting but four of the shelves are lite and I display some of my work there. For my layouts I purchased a picture hanger from IKEA that is almost like a wire clothes line that goes along the wall.  It has little clips with hooks on it and that you’re supposed to hang photos from.  I have mine mounted at the top of the wall, close to the ceiling and I’ve hung a long row of my layout across it.   I love to look up and see some great memories from thing in the morning as I can see it while I lay in my bed.  I rotate pieces out from both of my displays. When I do something I’m really pleased with it will generally go into one of my cubes or on my wire display and then I wake up and admire it in my bedroom.

5. What is the funniest craft disaster you've ever had?

I’m not sure I would consider this a craft disaster but a life disaster turned around, LOL.  I had a photo that I loved of my family but unfortunately my ex-husband graced the photo too and I really didn’t want to include him in the layout.  So with my Photoshop program I erased him from the photo and replaced his head with my sweet uncle’s.  The funniest part was my uncle didn’t even remember being at the occasion when he saw the photo….I forgot to mention to him he wasn’t, LOL.  So this just goes to show sometimes you can take sour grapes and turn them into something sweet.

We love this story! What a great way to make a photo beautiful again. :) Thanks for sharing with us, Lori!

I LOVE the easel card with drawers! What a great way to give little gifts with a card!! TFS!

It sure has been fun getting to know the designers better. Katie I love that you have your work displayed so you can see it when you wake up. What a great inspirational way to start each day. Amazing easel card. The purple on your st paddys card really pops and compliments the traditional green. Thanks.

Oh this is defininitely on my project list to make!

I would never have thought of building drawers beneath this card...very interesting challenge. Love the card! And I so enjoy the colors on that St. Paddy's card. Very nice blog posting! Thanks!

Admiration for the box making. Looks wonderful as a gift. I get lost reading measurements as a tutorial, how do peeps work this out? I would do it but only sitting & concentrating on each step.
Great St Patrick's card too...beautiful pops of purple & detail.

I am intrigued, will have to get this and play.

I love both projects! They're both gorgeous and would make lovely gifts:)
