A Week of Graphic 45 Albums: Day 1 with Safari Adventure!
This week is a whole week focused on albums! We have so many gorgeous ideas to share with you this week. To kick things off, Sandy Trefger and Elena Olinevich use Safari Adventure to create some show-stopper projects with gorgeous albums. It's going to be an awesome week!
First, Sandy shares an incredible album and case! You will love her video tutorials below. This is amazing!
"The beautiful Graphic 45 Safari Adventure collection and photos that my high school friend, Dyan shared of her trip to Africa inspired me to create this Safari Tag Album and Storage Case. I asked Dyan if I could “borrow” some of her photos for this project and she graciously agreed. Her trip to Africa in 2012 was work related but she was able to find time to visit various places and take these photos which are perfect for this travel project! First, I decided to create the tag album by combining two different colors of tags for a different variation as well as two different sizes so I could fold up the ends of the longer tags to create pockets. Assorted ribbons including a canvas ribbon are tied individually to each tag before attaching them to the ring that comes with each Graphic 45 Tag Album. This gave the album a bit more feminine look since the album was to showcase a lady’s African Trip. It took me about a month of working off and on to create both the storage case which I made from “scratch” or zero, the Tag Album and the smaller insert “albums.” There’s even a secret compartment in the storage case—it’s a false bottom that lifts up for a place to hide secret things and a pocket for the map. This project was a lot of fun to design and I really enjoyed working with this collection. I hope you’ll enjoy it too and maybe make one for yourself even if your trip is to a zoo rather than Africa. Happy Crafting! ~Sandy
If you do not have flowers that compliment your paper collection, you can create flowers out of Washi tape such as the Graphic 45 set which goes wonderfully with the Safari Collection! Cover a piece of cardstock with several rows of Washi tape for the size of the flower you want. Use a flower punch to punch out one or two flower sections and glue together. Add a sequin, beads or other centers to the flower. Use hot glue to attach the flower to your project. I created several of the Washi tape flowers for my Safari Tag Album. You can also spray lighter color Prima flowers with a color of your choice using a spray such as the Prima Color Bloom Mists.
For ribbons that have a white background or are too white for your project, you can quickly age them or give them a darker look by inking them with Distress Ink. For my Safari project, I used Gathered Twigs to change the color of the canvas ribbon and the background of the dotted ribbon and the animal print ribbons. I simply laid the ribbon over the ink pad and used a foam applicator to ink it to the color I wanted and then slid the ribbon down a bit more over the ink pad and repeated until the entire length had been “altered.” This way, I didn’t have to pull out my inking craft mat and interrupt my current work flow as I work on 3’ x 3’ square area." ~Sandy

Now, Elena shares some great techniques on how to use the vellum pages in our Mixed Media Albums!
" I have never been to a Safari trip. I can not say exactly if I dream about it, however I like travelling and I am sure that Safari Adventure collection is perfect for any adventurous pictures you have.
However when I started working with this collection I should to confess that it attracted me more and more and I had a blast inventing something wild and free for it.
This time I worked with Mixed Media Album, that includes pocket dividers, art sheets and vellum sheets. So I decided to make vellum sheets to work as an eye catching page. What I have done?
well, you know that vellum sheets are transparent though they have an opaque and matte feature. That was the main focus for me. First I made a composition using the papers on the art sheet, and after I started embellish the vellum sheet. The art sheet worked as a background for me. That’s a great chance to think ahead while creating such pages.
and then I started adding the colors to the vellum. I didn’t draw something precise or extraordinary, I only sketched some flowers and leaves, however they made the full view more finished and a bit complicated.
Some tips while coloring on the vellum:
- use light and transparent paints. It’s better to use something that dries fast and is not water based. I combined acrylic paints with silks paints( they are more transparent).
Watercolors don’t work for this.
- while wasing your brush, remove the extra with a dry wipe.
too much of the water will make the vellum wonky and wobling
- if you are afraid of drawing , you can just add 2-3 colors you have already used for your embellishments and papers and add some spots over and there
- coloring is a good remedy to hide the glue drops on the back cover of the vellum sheet.
I made a video tutorial for you and you can check how I’ve added the colors. I am showing the process for 2 pages, for the second page I used the washi tape and drawing it a bit too.
I also added more of abstract drawing, you can see the difference.
For the full album you can follow the next link - to see all those pages and pockets, as well as my colored vellum sheets.
Please , enjoy it." ~Elena
