Spotlight: Alexandra Morein - 2017 G45 Brand Ambassador

Hello, G45ers!

Welcome to the start of a new year with our all new Graphic 45 Brand Ambassadors. We are so excited to introduce our brand ambassadors, previously know as our design team members. Today is the first of 13 posts dedicated to introducing each of them. You will notice familiar faces, but this will be a great reminder of the beautiful work they create and their passion for crafting. We are going alphabetically, so at the top of the roll call is Alexandra Morein. Here you can learn a little bit more about her and take a look at a beautiful brand new Communique - DCE chain box she created, complete with tutorial. The creative details and excellent finishing work make it easy to see why we are so happy to have her back this year.

Graphic 45 Brand Ambassadors 2017 Big Announcement

Some of the fun changes for 2017 are changing our Design Team name to Graphic 45 Brand Ambassadors, adding more fun and short videos, monthly craft studio tours, more Facebook Live videos, and more G45er features!  We would also love to hear from you.  What would you like to see more of?  What type of projects, content, tips, anything at all, we want to know.

"First of all, I am so excited to be able to share my projects with the G45 fans for another year and I want to thank from the bottom of my heart for all the support and the sweet comments that I’ve received from different people throughout the past year.

So… This is my second term on the Graphic 45 team and I am happy to introduce myself for the second time.

I am 37, was born in Ukraine. At the age of 20 (back in 2000,) I moved with my family to Israel. I started crafting there, in 2012, after a surgery which forced me to stay home for a month. That was the time when I discovered Polymer Clay and started my blog “ClayGuana” (www.clayguana.blogspot.com), sharing different polymer clay handmade items.

Once you start to craft, it is really hard to stop. Once day I was buying alcohol markers in a craft shop (wanted to try them on polymer clay,) and a cashier in the shop started to ask me questions about the markers… Here and there, I got to know about scrapbooking and cardmaking from her. After an online survey, I was amazed with the amount of supplies a paper crafter needed (in comparison to the amount which was enough for the one who deals with Polymer Clay) and thought to myself that this was not my cup of tea.

I‘ve always loved to color though, A LOT, and this must have been the reason why I wanted to make my first ever scrapbook card, no matter what. I made one, then I made another one… They were so funny, as if they were created by a child But you do something, and you learn to make it better and better every time.

In 2013 my husband and I moved to Singapore, where I finally had lots of time to dedicate to my relatively new hobby. I was pregnant and stayed at home, learned a lot from the You Tube videos and started to make cards with the digital stamps, colored with Copic Markers.

Around 2016 I wanted to set Copics aside and change my style.

I’ve created lots of OOTP projects since then, a lot of them have video tutorials too.

Here are some more facts about me:

  • I never can craft without being interrupted by two of my kids
  • I can never finish a project in day unless it is a card (for the previously mentioned reason)
  • I like to work in silence (this happens like almost never)
  • I hate a mess on a craft desk
  • When I craft and am obsessed with a certain idea, I can stay hungry for hours.
  • My first G45 collection to work with was Steampunk Spells
  • My favorite tools are a bonefolder, scoreboard and my Sizzix machine.

Communique Chain Box Tutorial

By Alexandra Morein

"My today’s project will feature one of the most popular classy paper collections, which returned in 2016 as a Deluxe Collector’s  Edition – Communique.

This collection is full of classy cameras, vintage typewriters, 1920s newspapers, and glorious telegrams, the colors which prevail in the collection are so classy (black, red, cream and brown), that you can fit these papers almost for any project.

I have created a little box which can be kept on one’s office table. There are two little booklets inside the box, where either little pictures may be placed or some handy information may be put down (like the addresses of interesting sites, maybe some clever quotes or maybe passwords).

For a unique look, I’ve decided to attach metal chains to the lid of the box and I’m quite happy with the result.

I would like to share a tutorial about the process of putting the box together. Hopefully, you will find it inspiring and useful.

Shaking Up New Ideas with a Rose Box & Unique Wedding Card

Hello, G45ers!

We are shaking things up here on the Graphic 45 blog to get your week started off on the right foot.  In this post, we will announce this week's blog contest, feature a 3D Rose Box by Einat Kessler, and share a funky and fun wedding shaker card by Maria Cole. Our first featured project on the blog today is a fabulous gift box that will bring smiles to all who see it.  Einat has gone wild with fussy cutting roses from our Portrait of a Lady collection and arranged them so beautifully using an easel technique.  Following this lovely bouquet box, we have a wedding card that will surprise and delight any newly wed couple.  Maria has gone above and beyond to personalize this wedding card for the recipients, and it has not gone unnoticed.  We just love how she has mixed and matched our Vintage Hollywood collection with Safari Adventure to create this beauty.

Roses Treasure Box

By Einat Kessler

"I love creating boxes and I especially enjoy adding dimensional embellishments on top of the box. Portrait of a lady has such a gentle feminine look that I thought it would be perfect for a little treasure box. A box for little jewelry, notes or accessories, something the woman in us wants to keep hidden…" ~Einat Kessler

Tip #1:
To make a cut-out image “stand” create a small easel that can be glued both to the image and the surface you want it to stand on. Create the easel from a strip of paper and simply create a triangle. The base will be glued to the surface and the image to one of its sides.

Tip #2:
When creating a box use the same paper. Use the one side of the paper to create the bottom of the box and the other side to create the top side or lid.

Wedding Shaker Card

By Maria Cole

"Today I am sharing a wedding shaker card I made using one of Graphic 45's newest paper lines, Vintage Hollywood!

This beautiful collection is all about glamour and stardom with some tributes made to early film stars like Mary Pickford. But did you know, Vintage Hollywood also makes for a wonderful wedding card?

I have this special friend I made through Instagram. We share a love for Parson Russell Terriers, so naturally that's how we met! Anyhoo, she got married recently so I wanted to make sure she had a special card from my PRT Archie (@archie_prt on IG) and me.

My friend loves Disney. And I remember that she loves cheetah print. So I was in a bind because 99.99% of my paper is Graphic 45 (actually - who's calling that a bind? That's more like the world's best blessing, right? ;) and with Disney being licensed, we don't have such paper.

But I got to thinking and remembered there is a beautiful cheetah print design from Safari Adventure. And then there were those fabulous star and couple designs from Vintage Hollywood ... oh, and some beautiful red Petaloo flowers I got for Christmas.

Here's where I landed." ~Maria Cole

What a fun collection to honor the next "it couple." :) So I made a shaker and added some sequins and gold glitter for an extra celebratory touch. The "congratulations" die is from Avery Elle

The coordinating "you two" stamp is also Avery Elle. I have my lovely friend Lauren to thank for my new obsession with Avery Elle and Lawn Fawn. :)

Any black and white striped ribbon is a winner in my book. May Arts is where this lovely ribbon is from.

Inside the card, I used some of the matching ephemera cards. They are so beautiful. On one side you have a design and the back features an area for you to write on. You'll see that I also added some matching chipboard from Vintage Hollywood.

DIY Handbound Notebook Steampunk Debutante Project by Alexandra Morein Product by Graphic 45 Photo 1

Steampunk Debutante Handbound Notebook

By Alexandra Morein

"This notebook was created from start to finish using chipboard, cardstock, some printing paper and beautiful paper from the Steampunk Debutante collection.

To add a little zest, I’ve created a double cover which works like a “magical wallet”. It is magnetic, as well as it is help by the ribbons and it can be open to both left and right direction, reveling space for quick tucking in some tiny tickets and paper pieces.

A couple of the inside signatures are bound to the notebook’s spine using a thin twine, and the tails of the twine are embellished with the metal cogs and some beads to compliment the overall design.

I’ve cut out quite a lot of the small details out of the paper sheets from the Steampunk Debutante and layered them on the cover to create a finished composition."

Memory Keeping Like a Pro with Nature Sketchbook Layouts

Hello, G45ers!

We are wrapping up this week by getting back in touch with Nature Sketchbook with two lush double page layouts from Einat Kessler and Kathy Clement. Einat leads us into the woods with a YouTube tutorial featuring a layout that celebrates love and being in touch with nature. The brightly colored fussy cut pieces and flowers really pop against the quiet background to evoke a vintage storybook feeling. Kathy then shares a her layout in honor of getting lost in nature with a loved one. The three dimensional effects make it feel like you are right back in nature. Make sure to read their tips for additional insight into how to make a double page layout that will come together as well as this one did.

Before we dive in, it is time to announce the winner of this week's blog contest...

She commented on Facebook and said: "I just made a baby album for my niece using Little Darlings and Precious Memories. Love these!" Life is the Flower Layout

By Einat Kessler

"I have been waiting for awhile to use the Nature Sketchbook collection because it’s so beautiful and I finally found the right photos for it. This layout took me more than 20 years back in time to when my husband and I were young and beautiful. The flowers and nature in the photos are complimented by the beautiful pieces I cut from the papers and the flowers I added." ~Einat Kessler

Tip #1:

Add a piece of chipboard behind the photos to give them more dimension. For more dimension add more than one piece.

Tip #2:

You don’t always have to cut an image exactly on the lines. Cutting around the image’s outer lines while leaving a little margin will take much less time!

Natural Beauty Layout

By Kathy Clement

"One of the best things about having grown children is the fact that every now and again, you get to run away from home with them and do something fabulously fun!  My daughter Liz and I love to run away to the mountains of western North Carolina where we relax on the incredible garden trails at the Biltmore House in Asheville.  Surrounded by natural beauty, we talk, hike, explore, relax, and reconnect.  These unfiltered photos were taken in October 2016, and looking at them brings back the joy we felt under that bright October blue sky.  Nature Sketchbook provided the perfect patterns, colors, and images to capture the memory of that perfect day in this double page scrapbooking layout.  I call it Natural Beauty for the gorgeous surroundings, and the lovely subject of the photos, my daughter Liz." -Kathy Clement

Designer Tips

  1. When doing a double page layout, you want to create a sense of flow and connection between the two pages.  For this layout, I fussy cut the gorgeous wildflower image from Nature Sketchbook 12x12 signature page, cut it down the middle and then glued each half on the center edge of each page. The image serves as a bridge between the two photos and connects them beautifully.
  2. Turn negative space into a positive.  I had used all my Nature Sketchbook cardstock flowers, but I always keep the empty template because it makes a great stencil!   Trace the evacuated petal layers onto designer paper then cut them out.  This way, you can make as many flowers as you need, and the colors will always be a perfect match for your layout.
  3. If mixed media techniques cause your designer paper to warp or buckle, don’t despair.  There’s an easy fix!  Paint the edges of two sheets of.12x12 medium weight chipboard with black chalk paint.  Heat dry.  Then use a Nature Sketchbook stamp and white pigment ink all along the edges.  Trim your designer paper to measure 11.5” x11.5”, back with Scor-Tape or other strong, dry adhesive and press onto the prepared chipboard.  Now you’ve created a sturdy custom mat for your mixed media layout, and your paper lays flat..
  4. To give chipboard elements extra depth and texture I like to paint them with Distress Paints.  While paint is still wet, I sprinkle with embossing powders and heat set.  Once the embossing powder cooled on the ferns in this layout, I went back and stamped over the tops with Jet Black Archival Ink and a Nature Sketchbook script stamp.  I have a Snapguide tutorial from an older project that outlines this process for you.  Here is the link:https://snapguide.com/guides/alter-chipboard-queen-annes-lace/
