Curious about Memory Keeping? Here are two Olde Curiosity Shoppe Layout Tutorials to Help

Hello, G45ers!

It is time to jump into another craft filled week with a trip to the Olde Curiosity Shoppe, featuring two stunning layouts by design team members, Marina Blaukitchen and Lena Astafeva. Marina will put your creative gears in motion with a thoughtfully designed double page layout that also features Typography and Communique pages. Check out the included Snapguide tutorial for more! If that has not satisfied your curiosity, Lena then introduces her first ever canvas layout, an ornately designed piece that features an abundance of fussy cut oddities from this quirky collection. You can view her YouTube video for a full tutorial. We love how these two projects contrast to show how versatile a single collection can be when used by talented artists with distinct aesthetics, even while using similar techniques such as embossing. As if these projects were not enough, this week we are giving you a chance to win your very own Olde Curiosity Shoppe DCE prize pack. To enter, comment on the blog and/or Facebook today and all week. A winner will be chosen randomly and announced right here on the blog this Friday.

Double Layout Olde Curiosity Shoppe Tutorial

by Marina Blaukitchen

"I love how double layout looks because they create an effect that reflects unity and continuity in the scene when you need some cohesion between the photos that you are going to use.

The main element that links these pages is the papers. The fact that the pages coordinate with each other does not mean that their design may be identical or the decorations must be the same. It is much more attractive to combine different elements because he pages will gain visual appeal. I used the same background and I've tried playing with the ornaments to unify and merge the images.

Thinking of giving importance to the essence of what I wanted to convey with my daughters photos, their creativity and their imagination, I let the butterflies fly from the left page to the one on the right where they come into contact with the gears that start the creative processes symbolized in a small key." ~Marina Blaukitchen

Tips:

  • Select the same paper for the background of both pages.
  • Add other papers to break the uniformity and serve as the basis for each of the photos.
  • Include other techniques such as embossing or mixed media notes. I used embossing on this occasion.

"Hi All… Today I’m going to show you this Loaded Pocket of Secrets! Do you know what a Loaded Pocket is? Well one day I found these Loaded Pockets on YouTube and I fell in love!! It was the perfect project to use all my scraps! It can be made from an envelope or with your scraps, all the papers you don’t use for any reason..

My Loaded Pocket is full of all the pieces I have left from my old projects. For this, I use the Secret Garden Deluxe Collectors Edition.. A few chipboards, stickers, Post Cards, and fussy cut images I have cut in advance so I can take everything and start my Loaded Pocket! It was so fun and it is ready to give as a gift! I hope you like this idea!

XOXO" ~Magda Cortez

Tea Time Notecards in a Shaker Box A Place in Time by Kathy Clement Product by Graphic 45 Photo 1

Tea Time Notecard Ensemble & Shaker Top Gift Box

By Kathy Clement

"You all know how much I love paper, but I also love tea and drink it every single day.  Whenever I can combine my love for both of these things, I’m a happy girl.  That’s why when I found this lovely image of genteel ladies sipping tea in the garden in the April pages of A Place in Time, I decided I had to create this special Tea Time Notecard Ensemble in a Shaker Top Box.

With Mother’s Day, graduation, weddings, bridal showers and summer birthdays on the horizon, this gift is sure to come in handy.  Although it looks like it took ages to make, this elegant little ensemble comes together very quickly.  Each card takes about 10 minutes to make, from start to finish. For a simple presentation, you could just tie them together with a lovely ribbon.  But if you want to take the gift to the next level, house the notecards in this delightfully shabby chic shaker top box made with a G45 Ivory Staples Mixed Media Box.  I’ve prepared a YouTube video tutorial so you can make one, too." ~Kathy Clement

Tea Time Notecards in a Shaker Box A Place in Time by Kathy Clement Product by Graphic 45 Photo 11

Tea Time Notecards in a Shaker Box A Place in Time by Kathy Clement Product by Graphic 45 Photo 2

Tips:

  1. The G45 Staples Ivory Box has a lovely square window in the top.  To make sure your paper layer matches up perfectly, cut a 5” square of designer paper and center it on the top of the box, securing with repositionable tape.  Open the box and trace the opening onto the backside of your paper.  Remove the paper and die cut with a slightly larger square Spellbinders Nestability die.
  2. To make a stack of cards in very little time, use the same “recipe”.  Create an “assembly line” and prepare each paper layer, doily and fussy cut element. Stack them in order on your workspace.  Tie all bows.  Make all the card bases.  This way, you can put each card together in about 5-10 minutes.

Graphic 45 Precious Memories Mother’s Day

Layout with Tutorial

by Pam Bray

“There are so many precious memories but some seem to be more precious than others. Make sure to take photos as often as you can…even some of the smallest things can create some of the most meaningful memories. I am a firm believer in scrapbooking those moments, journaling about them, and capturing them in photos. I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am to make sure to document your families and friend’s memories, your travels, your most special or imperfect times of life.” Hugs, Pam Bray

Tips:

  • Creating layers on a scrapbook page gives interest.

  • Small titles made with stickers will become the focal point of what your layout is reflecting on.

Nature Sketchbook Double Page Layout
by  Maggi Harding

"Like many of us in this hobby, I started out making double page layouts as that is such a great format for displaying multiple photos and telling the story behind the pictures." ~Maggi Harding

Check out How to Make Graphic 45 Double Page Layout by Maggi HARDING on Snapguide.

Tips to help with double page layouts:

  1. Your two pages don't have to be mirror images of each other, instead, use the same papers on each page to pull the two pages together.
  2. Follow the odd numbers rule, i.e. use an odd number of photos as odd numbers of things tend to arrange in a more pleasing manner.  Of course, this is just a general rule, sometimes even numbers work too!
  3. Make your general design for both pages at the same time so that you can see the flow of the page.
  4. Use the same or similar embellishments on both pages.  For example, use the same flowers on both pages.

Mississippi River Double Layout Voyage Beneath the Sea Tutorial by Sandy Trefger Product by Graphic 45 Photo 5

Mississippi River Double Layout
By Sandy Trefger

"National Scrapbook Day is in May, and as a Graphic 45 Designer, I was challenged to create a layout using something I’ve never done before.  While I have made many, many layouts over the past twenty plus years, I’d never used mixed media on  a layout page.  This was the perfect time for me to step out of my “comfort zone” and do a bit of stamping, ink spraying and creating of a mixed media layout.  Last year my husband and I took a quick riverboat cruise down the Mississippi River on the Twilight to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary.  I wanted to do something different with those photos.  I decided to use the fabulous Graphic 45 Mixed Media album.  These are the first two pages that I’ve done.  I had so much fun and I love the addition of inks, sprays, and stamping to bring my layouts together.   My challenge to you for this month of National Scrapbook Day is to try new things.  As Ralph Waldo Emerson said…”All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better.”  Happy Crafting!" ~Sandy Trefger

Mississippi Double Page Layout YouTube Tutorial

Tip:
If you are new to creating layouts or any project with ink sprays and you are not really set up for all that “inkiness” in your work area, line your table or desk with paper towels and also use them to cover any background or side areas that might get ink overspray.  It makes for quicker cleanup, as you can just wad up the paper towels and toss them in the trash and move on to the next step in your project with a clean area.

Mississippi River Double Layout Voyage Beneath the Sea Tutorial by Sandy Trefger Product by Graphic 45 Photo 3

Tip:
Add vintage or rustic elements to your layout by gluing assorted metal findings such as small washers, hinges etc.  Start a collection of these findings so that you have them the next time you need some.  I’ve found bits and pieces of metal elements on the ground, in a parking lot, and of course, in my husband’s shop.  He doesn’t mind me taking a few, and I’ve told him, the rustier or grungier the better!   You will need to use a really strong glue to keep them in place on your pages.

"Midnight Masquerade is starting to become one of my new favourite collections. Although I tend to lean to the shabby chic colour palette, the rich colours from Midnight Masquerade are just gorgeous.  I’ve been wanting to play with the large tags from the Staples collection for a while now, so when I opened the collection and found an inspirational quote I liked, it was the starting point for my project. So today I’ve created for you a beautiful tag using Midnight Masquerade. You’ll want to read the tutorial below and learn how to recreate my Most Beautiful Thing We Can Experience Tag." ~Katelyn Grosart
