An Interview with Laura Denison

An Interview with Laura Denison

1. Why do you craft?
I can't think of any time in my life that I wasn't doing some sort of creative endeavor. Over the years I have done pretty much every sort of craft or fine art out there. It is just a part of who I am at a basic level.

2. What do you feel is your crafting forté?
My forte is 3D projects and mini albums. I love to find creative ways to hold interactive mini albums.
3. What inspires and motivates you to be creative?
I love what I do. Inspiration can come from a color, a sound, a scene. Pretty much anything can spark an idea or an image. Sometimes it is just a glimmer of an idea or concept. Sometimes I can see a project in full detail in my mind. My head gets so full of ideas...time is the issue.

4. What do you do with your projects once they're complete?
These days most of what I design I also teach, so I end up making at lest 3 of each project, one as the prototype, one as the sample for the pattern, and one that I make during my live classes. Many are display in my home. Many are in various stages of completion in my studio. Some I give away.

5. What is the funniest craft disaster you've ever had?

At the time of this incident, it wasn't at all funny. In retrospect it just makes me shake my head. Several summers ago, I was teaching a class at CHA in Las Vegas for G45. We had a sold out class of over 100 people. I was bringing all of the precut chipboard for the class in my carry on luggage. Both of my carry on pieces were searched by two different TSA agents at airport security. One had my Wizard House and was fascinated and asking me questions. The other got the chipboard. In the distraction of answering questions, half of the chipboard did not make it back into my carry on. I realized it was missing the morning of the class. After allowing myself 10 minutes to be completely hysterical, I had to shake it off and come up with a solution. We had one cover and the spine for everyone in class and ended up using the 8 x 8 pad cover to make a 6' x 9" album cover....it was creative magic making 8" become 9"!! Turn a disaster into a creative opportunity!
We remember that genius moment! You're like the MacGyver of crafting, Laura! Thanks for sharing with us :)
