Favorite head shot

"My name is Kathy, and I am addicted to beautiful paper…. and stamps, and embellishments, and paint and everything involved with the wide, wonderful world of creativity!  I’ve been married to my loving and supportive husband Dale for 40 years and live in the beautiful state of North Carolina.  We are parents to 5 amazing grown children: 3 handsome boys and 2 strong, independent girls.  We also have 3 beautiful granddaughters who seem to have inherited my penchant for paper!  I created my first card when I was about 4, using my Doodle Pad and Crayola crayons.  As a sickly child, I passed many hours making little cards and gifts for family and friends.  For most of my adult life I was too busy raising children, caring for our home, volunteering, homeschooling and helping with our family business to play with paper but when I found myself an “empty nester” I rediscovered my love for creating and began making little gifts for friends and family.  Lo and behold, the recipients began asking me to create for their friends and family and before I knew it, my business, Kathy by Design was born.  A few years into my journey, I stumbled upon an amazing opportunity to design custom souvenir menus for BMW executive banquets held all over the world (yes, the automaker). When I started my blog in 2013, I began to audition for design team positions and through that venture, found new friends who have challenged me, supported me and inspired me to grow, try new things and spread my creative wings.  My hobby has turned into a full time business, and most days find me happy as a clam at high tide, working in my home studio. I had no idea that this creative, exciting and fulfilling time lay ahead of me when I opened my first box of Crayola Crayons.  I’m excited to share my creative journey with all of you, and thank you for being such wonderful companions along the way."

First, Kathy will share 3 of her favorite G45 projects! Enjoy these awesome ideas:

"I love everything about playing with paper, but cards are my absolute favorite creations.   I love to pull images, patterns and embellishments together to make a card that will bring joy to the heart of the recipient.  This very feminine card made with A Ladies’ Diary features a monochromatic color palette.  Because monochromatic cards are made with varying hues of the same color, you can layer a lot of different patterns together and still achieve a harmonious composition.  It’s also fun to add lots of dimension with foam adhesive.  Add texture with ribbons, lace, flowers and embellishments. Inking all the edges with Tea Dye Distress Ink served to anchor the design. Surprise the recipient by dressing up the inside of the card with a gift card pocket, tiny post card, fussy cut details and more pretty paper layers. The end result is an elegant card that will become a keepsake for years to come.

Designer tip: Keep the focal image from floating off the page by placing it within a frame.  This frame was made by die cutting 3 separate layers.  The top layer is made with printed paper from A Ladies’ Diary.  The other two layers are cardstock.  I used foam dimensionals to join the 3 frames together, then placed the image in such a way that part of it peeks out of the frame.

"As the old song says, “Everybody Loves a Baby,” and the bright primary colors, vintage images and sweet patterns in Graphic 45’s Mother Goose Collection make it a natural for a baby themed mini album.  While cleaning my studio, I found a rather large stack of 4” x 5.5” white card bases and thought to myself, “You ought to do something with these.”  A few sketches later, I had designed this interactive mini album that’s loaded with pockets and fold downs and tags.  The design was so popular with my followers, that I did a step out tutorial that showed how to build the album base, binding and cover.  You can find the link HERE.

"When a nasty respiratory virus was making its rounds, I thought it would be nice  to make a little get well pocket card to cheer up a sick friend. I love to make cards with pockets, but I’d never made a tag with a pocket before, so I thought I would give it a go.  The Large Ivory Album tag is a nice, sturdy tag, and it was sized just right to hold a pocket pack of facial tissues.  From there, I got the idea to tuck in a tea bag and honey stick to create a little get well ensemble.. The color palette of World’s Fair is so cheery and the images are so happy, I knew they’d be the perfect vehicle to carry out the idea.  (Besides, the tissue pack and tea bags I had in my kitchen were a good color match.)  A few sketches later, I had the mechanics figured out, and was on my way to creating a bright, uplifting Get Well Pocket Tag..  I liked the finished product so much that I decided to submit it as my Graphic 45 First Round Audition Tutorial.  If you’d like to make one yourself, just follow this easy SnapGuide tutorial.

We love how Kathy shares how to be #UniquelyYou! You'll love this tutorial and idea from the creative Kathy.

"The Typography collection stole my heart the minute I laid eyes on it!  The wonderful scripts, bold colors, artsy images and uplifting sentiments are just my style!  When we were asked to create a project that defines us, there was no question in my mind that I would be working with this inspiring collection.

Since my vintage style uses lots of layers, color and detail, I was sure to include these in the design.  I also love to incorporate fun embellishments, ribbons and bodacious flower clusters in my work, so you’ll find those here, too.  Finally, I love interactive elements, so I created a secret pocket for a Staples Regular Tag that opens to reveal a sentiment that perfectly expresses my values and feelings.  This layout is truly “me on a page.”  I hope you find it inspiring, and enjoy viewing it as much as I enjoyed creating it!

Designer Tips:

1. Draw the eye to your main image by creating a custom frame.  I used my craft knife to cut out the center portion of this Typography frame, then inserted my own picture inside.

2. Tell your story!  The stamps that surround the framed photo were specifically chosen to commemorate my journey.  In 2016, I was chosen to be on the G45 Design team, so that’s what the 1 and 6 stamps represent.  It was my 3rd audition, and that’s what the 3 represents.  And, the 45 is self-explanatory.  This is a fun way to capture special dates.

3. Use what you have.  I pulled my grungiest paint brushes out, bundled them with twine and used them as a fun embellishment on the page.

4. When cutting with a craft knife, if you use a glass mat beneath your paper, you’ll get a very clean cut.  If you don’t have a glass mat, use the glass from an old photo frame.  Just wrap the edges with masking tape so you don’t cut yourself."
